General Scope of Project
In 2015, Rhode Island College selected n|e|m|d architects, inc. to design the renovation to the Introduction to Biology Lab and Preparation Area in the Fogarty Life Science Building. This 1,350 SF newly renovated lab will accomplish three main goals: to provide accessibility to all students, to create a more collaborative environment for student group projects, and to upgrade obsolete equipment/technology. As part of this project, n|e|m|d and consultants designed the modernization of the lab’s MEP/FP systems, the interconnection of these new systems with the building’s existing infrastructure, the selection and placement of new finishes and furniture, and the installation of new laboratory equipment.
The RIC Biology Lab Project posed some unique design challenges: to maximize the use of available space while still providing an interactive learning environment that is compatible with current teaching practices; and to utilize durable finish materials without sacrificing the warmth and comfort of the communal spaces. Working closely with a hand-selected group from the Biology Department, n|e|m|d was able to meet both of these challenges with an attractive and innovative design.
Other considerations of prime concern to the College were the budget and schedule of this project. Since the lab equipment and furniture were included in the project budget, n|e|m|d strove to maximize the efficiency of the room layouts, to get the most benefit from each furnishing dollar spent. And because a project’s budget is inexorably tied to maintaining the project’s schedule, n|e|m|d collaborated with school representatives and the general contractor to ensure that the schedule was closely followed. All of these efforts contributed to Rhode Island College’s Biology Lab Project being completed on time and on budget.
