General Scope of Project
Brigham & Women’s Hospital commissioned n|e|m|d architects, inc. to design the Lee Bell Center for Breast Imaging. In order to complete this project successfully, n|e|m|d consolidated the hospital’s fragmented Breast Imaging and Surgery departments, installed a 3.0T breast MRI over the hospital’s main ambulance bay, modified the existing structure to carry the additional load of the heavy magnet, and devised specially constructed walls to shield adjacent departments from the machine’s sound and vibrations. In addition, n|e|m|d created a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere for the patients by designing a “spa-like” space with stone and wood finishes, decorative glazing, and calm, soothing colors.
