General Scope of Project
In 2017, the State of Rhode Island asked n|e|m|d to complete a risk assessment of various behavioral health hospitals on the John O. Pastore campus in Cranston. One of these hospitals was the Regan Building, a six-story, 130,000 SF building that was in need of a near full renovation. Working along side the State of RI, our design team tackled obstacles like roof replacement, insulated over-skinning of the existing façade, and fitting a large program into a space with severe space restraints. Restricted floor plates caused the space constraint, but planning each floor of the hospital to have unlimited flexibility relieved that burden. Spaces were designed to accommodate a variety of activities, offices for staff became touch down spaces instead, and ligature resistant barn doors were chosen for all patient rooms to eliminate the spatial requirements of a full door swing. The corridors were also made slightly narrower, which not only saved space, but provided increased security with better views for nurses from their stations.
Patient well-being is of the utmost importance to n|e|m|d and to the State of Rhode Island. Throughout the design process, the patient, their families and the staff were always the priority. Working through budget constraints, unexpected additions to the scope, and a tight floor plan did not compromise the requirements and needs of the program. One hundred and six beds to accommodate adult psychiatric and geropsych inpatient units, a physical therapy area, a kitchen and a dining room were all included in this design.
