General Scope of Project

In 2013, n|e|m|d architects, inc. was commissioned by the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island to conduct a Building Study for the existing Dwares Jewish Community Center and evaluate the uses of all the building’s spaces.  At the same time, n|e|m|d was charged with formulating a Master Plan for the JCC, to prioritize projects necessary for renovation and growth and to create a guide for building standards, thus ensuring a unified design aesthetic as the projects are constructed.

When these studies were finished, n|e|m|d was hired to design over 25,000 SF of the community center space, including the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center. The original education center was on the lower level of the building, without easy access and necessary meeting and storage space. The new design not only brought the education center from the lower level to the upper level and right off of the main lobby, but it allowed for ample storage, flexible meeting space, display cases for historic pieces, and a communal computer nook for researching. n|e|m|d designed the space to feel like an experience as you enter, with the flooring mimicking the train tracks leading into the concentration camps, and the brick accent wall and lighting taking you back in time.
