General Scope of Project

With an expanding need for housing an aging population, the owners of Briarcliffe Health Care Campus reached out to n|e|m|d to design an assisted living facility to augment their existing nursing and memory care campus. To compliment three other buildings on their campus, which is located in a beautiful wooded area in Johnston, RI, n|e|m|d worked with the owners to design a modern two story building using the same material languages. The new building will be steel framed construction with a mix of exterior finishes, including stone, lap siding and shake styles. Residential units located at the front of the building, or within the courtyard, shall have full patios, balconies or juliettes for enjoying the outdoors directly from their living space.

Units facing the rear of the building shall have oversized picture windows to experience the protected forest area located directly behind the building. In addition to 66 assisted living units, all of which have kitchenettes and oversized toilet rooms, the new facility will have a bistro, private dining area, library, multiple public living/lounging rooms, an exercise room and a hair salon. The main lobby will have a welcoming fireplace and sitting area as well as a soothing water wall. A state of the art kitchen shall provide meal services for the new building as well as supporting services for the other buildings on campus and will feed a contemporary dining room overlooking the protected wetlands.

Additional support spaces for the residents will include laundry rooms, resident storage and a physician/nursing suite, while staff support spaces will include a staff lounge and meeting space.
